Last weekend saw the MCM Comic Convention take place at the Excel exhibition centre in London. With an estimated one hundred thousand visitors over the three day weekend, the con was certainly a major event for comic, manga and movie lovers alike. Here’s the top highlights from the weekend…
Daniel also alluded that the movie (based on the novel by Joe Hill), is a heteronomy of differing genres, presenting mystery, horror and black comedy. The film is set for cinema release October 29th and follows the story of Ig Perrish, a young man accused of murdering his girlfriend. Desperate to find the real killer, Ig awakens one morning with mysterious, supernatural horns growing from his head. Daniel hinted that the horns were not the only special make up he wore throughout filming but didn’t want to spoil too much of the ending for fans.
Of course questions turned to Daniel’s most famous role as the young wizard Harry Potter. For all you fans desperate to know, Daniel’s favourite mythical creature from the series is the Basilisk!
Other movie highlights included a presentation and Q&A with Kingsman: The Secret Service writer Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Marvel’s Civil War) a Q&A with the cast of the upcoming fantasy Welcome to Purgatory (including the legend that is BRIAN BLESSED!!) and a Q&A with The Hunger Games actress Stef Dawson (Annie Cresta).
There was plenty more for comic fans as well, with writer Dan Abnett attending as a late guest to discuss his latest work with Marvel on Guardians 3000 and his new Tomb Raider novel The Ten Thousand Immortals. I asked Dan what we could expect from his current Guardians 3000 run and he replied by stating that ‘the whole story was based on a break down in temporality, allowing a lot of time hopping and plenty of inconsistencies in the reality of the narrative’. When I asked him if the crew of Guardians 3000 would be returning to the 21st century to team up with Rocket, Groot and the rest of the current team, he gave me a resounding yes!
There were plenty of independent comic writers and artists attending the event – the team behind Twisted Dark showcased their latest project Tabatha; Eli Mamane gave plenty of insight into his horrifying, parasite infested work Squatters and Steve Penford delighted us with his views on the first three issues of Moon (we’ll have reviews of these awesome new comics in the coming weeks).
As with all comic cons there was of course plenty of Cosplay, with the Eurocosplay finals, and lots of merch to get your hands on. Pikachu hats were a-plenty, with the Pokemon team handing out loads of lovely goodies. Gaming fans were treated to exclusive demos of the latest Pac-Man, WWE 2k15 and a rather large tournament of League of Legends.
Overall the weekend was a great success with plenty to suit geeks all round. Roll on next year!
