ABE SAPIEN #11
Writer: Mike Mignola / Scott Allie
Art: Max Fiumara
Colours: Dave Stewart
Letterer: Clem Robins

To The Last Man [Part 3 of 3]
The horror increases exponentially for the town of Payton, Arizona. Undead hell is unleashed in one swift move as Abe bears witness to it all. He is seen in one panel, stricken with grief and overlooking from shadows, while the narration reads “you’re doomed to find neither friendship nor loyalty”, a line spoken in a different place yet sits perfectly in the context of Abe’s current situation with  his change, the events in Payton and the adage of this title since its re-inception.

Indie Fiction Triple Feature #2

Welcome to the second installment of IFTF for the year. This month I’ll be taking a glance at Image Comics’ One-Hit Wonder, Dark Horse Comics’ White Suits and Oni Press’ The Bunker. I was due to cover Image’s Carbon Grey, falsely lulled into a sense of excitement by the complete lack of information on the cover, information such as it being the third volume and thus an altogether horrible place to dive in. Anyway, selections have been made, let the fun begin!

*SPOILERS*

Magneto #1

Writer – Cullen Bunn  //  Artist – Gabriel Hernandez Walta

Following on from Uncanny X-Men #16, Magneto #1 follows Erik as he once again goes his separate way leaving behind Cyclops' reformed school for the gifted.

Mutants are being experimented on and murdered; Erik’s mind has snapped. He cannot and will not sit by idly while these crimes continue. He will do all in his power to stop these nightmares from occurring as shown in one of the very first pages of the book; the ghastly drawing shows what savagery Erik has turned to. The image is one of a Doctor Eli Hatcher on his knees in the street with half a dozen poles impaled in his head. This man presumably committed crimes against Mutants, we as the reader only know him through Erik’s mind. Is he really guilty and does Erik have a right to take his life?

The New Guy: Transmetropolitan

3/11/2014

Picture
by Lewis E. Ryan

Welcome to the first official installment of The New Guy, my monthly rant on various classic graphic novels from the perspective of a comic newbie. This inaugural jaunt will be focusing on Warren Ellis’ treatise on…. well, everything: Transmetropolitan.

Ellis brings us the story of Spider Jerusalem, a journalist in self-imposed exile, who is forced back into the city to face the grim dystopian realities there contained. It reads like Hunter S. Thompson trapped in a Philip K. Dick nightmare. There are storyline arcs, but narrative is not really the focus of this work. Most page space is taken by Jerusalem’s insane ranting. The result is a thinly veiled excuse for Ellis to express his views through a medium. I mean, obviously all writers express themselves, their values and morals, through their characters, but Spider Jerusalem is literally a soapbox.

The New Guy: Preface on Holy Ground

So, I’m not exactly what you’d call a veteran comic book collector but that’s not to say that I haven’t always been a collector of sorts. My love for Marvel started at a young age with the 1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men cards. I was eleven years old and collecting basketball cards already. So, one day I walked into a store to get my fix and there in front of me was a different kind of collector card. There was nothing wrong with basketball cards, but for some reason I decided to try something else. In 1993, Michael Jordan was my universe. In 1994, I was introduced to a new kind of hero.

Slave to the Grindhouse

3/9/2014

Picture
by Tiff Douglas

When we think Grindhouse, we think sleazy, violent and low budget. The word conjures up an image of voluptuous vulgarity with a very thin veil of morality. Normally associated with film,Grindhouse cinema is one of the most loved and hated sub genres in cinematic history. Comics ,also a form of visual entertainment, are perfect breeding grounds for such reckless nastiness, you can pretty much do whatever you damn well please in a comic book and you don’t have a stinking budget blocking your shot; you’ve got the audience, you’ve got the skill. Game on!

 MOON KNIGHT #1
Writer: Warren Ellis
Art: Declan Shalvey
Colours: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Chris Eliopoulos
Variant Covers: Adi Granov/Bill Sienkiewicz/ Skottie Young/ Katie Cook

Before we even begin this symposium - let us discuss the facts.

Warren Ellis returns with an ongoing! Not counting OGN’s. A writer that can take a singular character or a team and dissect them into all the finer details, follow by expanding it in a billion brilliant tangents, and then converge them into a singular definitive point.

Declan Shalvey & Jordie Bellaire!!!!!!!!

Moon Knight - that crazy character you’ve always been curious about but haven't read yet… or simply hadn't found its ‘pocket’.

Remember those 1980’s cartoons which made you so excited with colours, awesome fire up music and just overall a good storyline of good vs evil? Imagine reading it in comic book form as an adult and having awesome flashbacks to your childhood…it’s a DAMN awesome feeling! Nitro Battlers is a throwback to everything an 80’s and 90’s kids grew up loving while managing to maintain a strong sense of heart.

Review: Empire of the Dead #2

3/5/2014

Picture
by Jake Douglas

In the musical sense, I almost always feel that when a band releases a second album, it is their best and strongest work; lyrically and musically. You've got Metallica with Ride the Lightning, Kings of Leon with Aha Shake Heartbreak, Rainbow with Rainbow Rising, and Van Halen with Van Halen II.

With each of these bands, their second album retains the energy and the like-ability of the first, but with higher production values and a more mature approach to the music.

In comics the first issue will absolutely make or break the story.

The second issue has the opportunity to not only continue the story, but to expand on everything that the first issue gave us a taste of. The energy remains, the wild ideas become a little more fanciful, and the storytelling begins to really take shape into what will eventually become a well rounded, solid story that in years to come can be viewed all together in a pretty hardcover edition.
