Un-death. Pretty much sums up this series in a nutshell. Fortunately, it isn’t as simple as that - as it is as quirky and unusual as the term “un-death”. Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash), and Mike Norton brings us a tale that is neither a ghost story, zombie fest or an iteration of Twin Peaks… yet it is all of them all at once.

Revival unfolds in the little town of Wausau, Wisconsin; where sisters Dana and Martha (otherwise known as ‘Em’) Cypress face an event in which the dead start coming back to life. “This sounds familiar”, you ask, almost immediately thinking of zombies, yet these ‘Revivers’, as they are referenced as in the book, retain all their memories and there are only a handful of them. No one in the town can pinpoint the exact moment of when it all went down, but after the event, anyone who had died stayed dead. So why these select few, and what exactly is going on? 

Enter the CDC (Centres for Disease Control & Prevention), promptly declaring the town a quarantine zone, effectively trapping the citizens in with whatever horrors await them, also in turn keeping out any possible outside expertise and the media, some of which believe this is some sort of miracle, and others, a more sinister beginning.

Guardians of the Galaxy #11.Now

Many people have been quite harsh towards the new Guardians of the Galaxy book; I guess I can be happy in my ignorance since I have never read any of the earlier volumes. I will admit that one of the main reasons I keep buying this book is due to Sara Pichelli and Steve McNiven’s art as they are both extremely proficient artists. They cram their books with insane amounts of detail, intricate shadowing, superbly crafted anatomy from panel to panel. In this issue Justin Ponsor’s colouring is proficient while complementing the work that Pichelli has achieved and allowing her shadowing to catch the eye. My only complaint visually would be the horrible use of a stock image for Earth towards the end of the book.

Bendis on the story side has unfortunately allowed this book to stagnate; it started off quite intriguing, especially in issue 0.1 where we learn about Peter Quill’s childhood. Bendis needs to provide more character building; this was perfect for it as it involved the characters sitting at tables talking. Sadly it was a wasted opportunity due to Tony Stark taking up precious panels and a Skrull taking up even more panels.

I am more than content proceeding with this book due to the art but Bendis needs to step up his game, and hopefully the next 4 chapters of The Trial of Jean Grey pick up the pace.

We all collect and read comics differently, some of us have huge pull lists at our local comic store, with titles that you have been reading for years whilst following the continuity religiously. And some of us rifle through the latest preview magazine looking for something that catches our eye, reading news on the internet about exciting events that come up and new stories to explore. Those explorers often jump onto a title when something new happens, to read the current story, that’s exactly what I have done with Batman and Robin #24 and #25. 


I haven’t read any new Batman in a while and by a while I mean a couple of years. Not because I’m not interested but because sometimes the major leagues can really give you continuity fatigue. I become hungry for stories rich in originality so I head for the Indies, but in the back of my mind I always know I’ll go back to Dc and Marvel and catch up with my old friends. Along comes Batman and Robin #24 with a promise of a fresh origin story for Two Face.

Wolverine is a man of messy origins.

With Wolverine: Origin, back in 2002/2003, Paul Jenkins took us back into the late 1800's, detailing the childhood of James Howlett, the boy who would eventually become Logan.

While pretty (thanks to Andy Kubert) and intriguing, for me, I could have just the same guessed everything that happened and felt the same way about the character. It offered no real revelations except for the fact that he was not initially raised with the name Logan. Now nearly twelve years later, Marvel takes us back to where Wolverine: Origin left off, shoving the first blood soaked issue of Wolverine: Origin II in our sweaty faces. Only this time, Kieron Gillen takes the helm as writer, with Adam Kubert on art duties instead of his brother Andy.

Origin II picks up shortly after the first series left off, with Logan out in the wilderness cozying up to a pack of wolves. Hunting, eating, hunting, eating, running, hunting, more hunting and so on and so forth, Logan seems to finally be at peace with who and what he is. Deep down however, he knows that the peace he has with the pack is a fleeting thing. Just like the bad shit that went down in Alberta when he was sick little James Howlett, and just like the even crazier events that occurred in the stone quarry that led him to where he is now. Logan begins to see that no matter where he goes, strong smelly winds seem to follow.

IDW’s TMNT series continues to draw from the best of everything that came before, while managing to distinguish itself as a successful comic in its own right.

Following their pyrrhic victory at the conclusion of City Fall, the Turtles, along with April, Splinter, Casey and an outcast Alopex, escape to the safety of April’s parents’ home in Northampton, in the hopes of regrouping and healing the damage inflicted upon them by the Shredder.

People have complained loud and aplenty about the New 52 reboot of the DC Universe, the second time DC Comics has opted to restart their continuity. Two times in, I can’t be certain, but let’s just say 76 years? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the other hand, existing for less than half that time, have seen their continuity restarted fresh, again and again, through various movies, comics and cartoon series, and somehow, it never manages to be extraneous. I realised just the other day, that in regards to the many incarnations of TMNT: I’m currently reading the new IDW comic series, watching the new Nickelodeon cartoon, and rereading both the old Mirage and Archie series as IDW releases them in trades. Four separate Ninja Turtle continuities, all with essentially the same characters, some with stories similar to the others, but all strong, distinct and possessing of enough merit to stand on their own, and that especially includes the fantastic original work IDW is doing with the property.
