There is so much that could be said about Vin Diesel.
He’s the mammoth hunk of man meat. He’s an action hero star. He does a lot of charity work. Plus, he had a massive bromance with the late Paul Walker, so much so he recently named his daughter Pauline. Oh and he also likes to play Dungeons & Dragons whenever he can because Vin Diesel is an absolute huge geek. We love it!
Not only can he shift between mainstream action and “comedy” films but he can appear in our comic book adaptations too and do an equally stellar job in each. So here is a list of his best work...

Saving Private Ryan
Looking back over his career, it’s kind of hard to picture him in anything remotely gritty and realistic. It’s all shiny cars and kick ass moves. However, when he was just starting out in his career, one of the first films that he starred in was the seminal and unforgettable Saving Private Ryan. Directed by Stephen Spielberg, the movie (which was robbed of the Academy Award but we won’t go into that but we will mention it to reinforce the travesty) was one of the more brutal war movies that honed in on the violence rather than the propaganda that countries have been trotted out for years. Diesel plays Private First Class Adrian Caparzo who joins a team of soldiers hunting the titular guy and ultimately gives his life to the cause. It’s a fantastic moving performance, if a bit small.
Pitch Black
There is no denying that Vin Diesel has been gifted with some iconic roles. But, arguably, one of his more favoured and undeniably legendary characters is the blind alien Riddick. Starring in a trilogy, it’s really the previously unassuming sci-fi romp Pitch Black that propelled Diesel into cult film ilk. Pitch Black is an intergalactic romp revolving around a criminal verses mutants- a spaceship is transporting a group of ragtag people only mechanical failure leaves the ship abandoned on a planet with no night. Riddick, the sole prisoner who becomes an unlikely hero when monsters on the planet decide to attack, and honestly, it becomes this quick ass
Fast and Furious Series
Like it or love it, the fact that Fast and Furious is inexplicably one of the most popular and longest series to ever hit our cinemas. Now, I’m not going to lie, despite overseeing the series this week in anticipation for today (where the article was originally going to be an overview), to me, it’s all very broom broom, vroom vroom, bang, bang followed by cheesy one-liners and an explosion. It’s never really connected with me but I can appreciate that it is an entertaining series with sexy men and females and even sexier cars. With Vin Diesel at the helm, and a loving tribute to Paul Walker, Furious 7 could be another step in cinematic dominance.
The Iron Giant
Leaning a bit more to our side, the muscle bounded man mountain also has a soft core. And I dare you all not to blub completely at the end of this film. Coming from Brad Bird before he was lured to the Disney dark-side, The Iron Giant is one of the best children movies of all time and will be watching repeatedly when you are an adult. The movie revolves around Hogarth, a young lad who discovers a giant in the forest near his home and the pair form an unlikely relationship. Diesel voices the slow drawling metallic robot and yet still makes us blub every time he says Superman. Earnest, loving and protective, Disel enchants the voice of the titular creature that definitely is the basis for his next role….
Guardians of the Galaxy
I’ve tried but I cannot find one fault with this. Perhaps there are but because of the energy everyone involved delivers, the film isn’t dented by the problematic minutia. Guardians of the Galaxy is a sci-fi epic that has us bursting with hilarity, great action sequences and a whole host of characters and creatures so colourful and vibrant you can’t help but love them. Talking about love, there is not one person in the Marvel fandom who doesn’t love Groot. The tall tree-like bodyguard utters just three syllables and it was Diesel’s job to make sure they have the right affliction and meaning. It’s really hard to give character to just three words, but he does so evocatively that when he utters those immortal
Oh - and he did it in a heap load of different languages.
