Do you know how Woody Allen makes his films? He has an idea, he pops it in a draw and then later, he goes back to the draw and says, in the best Woody Allen voice; “yeah, I'll make the one now”. It may not be the most conventional way, but it's his way and he sure does make some belters. I'm a big Woody Allen fan. He can do it all – he acts, he directs, he writes (Ed: he voices an Ant). For the DVD release of Fading Gigolo, here are his best films

by Cookie N Screen Eva Green is one of the most beautiful actresses in the world. I’d happily have you fight me on that but I urge you to find one person who doesn’t look at the exquisite French actress and gasp in awe. But yes, aesthetically she is stunning and she has proved her mettle repeatedly by exuding this enormous talent that is breathless in everything she is in. Whether it’s films in her native tongue or starring in mainstream blockbusters, she has those incredible fetes that truly capture the character that she is portraying. In her new film, 300: Rise of An Empire out on DVD now, she is battling against Lena Headey's Gorgo as a Greek Artemisia, on a war path with her many armies. But let's have a look at her best work. by Cookie N Screen There is no denying that Lena Headey is a Queen. Despite her murderous role on television, every transition she makes onto the screen just exudes acting royalty. Though her parts in films range from the banal and supporting to the incredibly powerful, her work ranges and she delicately weaves background, character and brilliant skill. The British actress now has a whole hoard of fans and critical acclaim building her entire career with roles in Brother’s Grimm and The Jungle Book as well as Sarah Connor in her own television series. With plenty more movies heading her way, today sees her reprisal of her role of Queen Gorgo in 300: Rise of an Empire – which is out on DVD today. But what movies of her's is the best, let's have a look; by Cookie N Screen Very wrongly, in my adolescent brain, I had written off Julianne Moore. Manly because she portrayed Clarice Starling, a role immortalized by Jodie Foster. It wasn’t that Moore was bad either, it was merely that the portrayal beforehand and the story lacked for her presence. And I had written her off. Undeniably, I will bite my tongue and hold my hands up and say I was utterly stupid because Julianne Moore conquers everything that she is given, even in lesser films such as the recent outing for Carrie. Looking at her pure breadth of work, it is astonishing that she is standing without an Oscar but merely a collection of nominations. She is yet again poised on awards after winning Best Actress in Cannes thanks to David Cronenberg’s fantastic work in Maps to the Stars. But what else has Julianne Moore excelled in? The answer is everything, but here are just a few. Honorable Mention: Boogie Nights purely for not wanting too much PTA. And melodramas The End of the Affair and Far From Heaven. But honestly, Moore could illicit a second list, these are just my favourites. by Hayley Charlesworth Jeff Bridges is my favourite actor of all time. I would gladly watch greats like True Grit alongside duds such as R.I.P.D. purely out of love for The Dude. Therefore, choosing an essentials list for Jeff Bridges is akin to choosing a favourite child for me. However, needs must, and to celebrate the release of The Giver, here are some of Bridges’ finest films. by Cookie N Screen There is no denying that the dreamy John Cusack is an acting legend. Ever since he was cast as the heartthrob in a bunch of romantic dramas, comedies and heroic action flicks, he has fanned many a flame. He has already proved his mettle as an actor too, able to connect with an audience and delicately weave the stories of his characters, all with enough charisma to mirror a Bruno Mars concert. Jon Cusack is one of America’s best talents. Today, the release of thriller Grand Piano which sees Cusack as a sniper who holds Elijah Wood, an acclaimed hostage at one of his performances. With that in mind, let’s have a look at the best Cusack movies. Honourable Mention: I flippin' love Identity but it seems the general census doesn't. You should all watch it though. by Liam McMillen Over his career, Jim Jarmusch has created some of the most innovative and idiosyncratic films of the late 20th and early 21st century, cementing himself as one of the greatest, absurd filmmakers of our time. With his latest, Only Lovers Left Alive – a beautifully solemn and relaxing film, with great performances from Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton – out now on DVD, I look at Jim Jarmusch's best films. by Robbie Jones Whether he’s lovingly suffering as Phoebe Buffay’s boyfriend or introducing clips of Mac and Me on talk shows, Paul Rudd is, and always has been, a delight to watch. Next year, he joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ant-Man, but first he’s churning out another romantic comedy with Parks and Recreation star Amy Poehler in They Came Together. To celebrate, let’s take a look at the essential films of Paul Rudd’s career. Honourable mentions: Dinner for Schmucks, an underrated comedy featuring Steve Carell (Although I’ll admit it’s quite ridiculous) and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is a phenomenal teen drama, but to call it a Paul Rudd essential wouldn’t be right considering most people probably forget he’s even in it. by Cookie N Screen Mark Strong is a talented actor with a wealth of talent that knows no bounds. He has appeared on stage, on film, on television and even in the Jaguar adverts that brim with his sultry tones. The thespian has enacted villains and heroes, but mainly falls on the former side with his knitted brow and stern gaze that will entice, excite and endear. He has had a long history of movies spanning decades and will be seen playing opposite Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth in the new thriller Before I Go to Sleep as Dr Nash, an unknown presence in Christine’s life as she battles her amnesia. But promise not to forget these essential films. by Robbie Jones Jason Segel is one of the funniest men working today. He somehow always manages to hit the right notes and generally produces great stuff. So it’s a shame to see his new film Sex Tape getting such bad reviews. The film stars Segel and Cameron Diaz as a couple who are overwhelmed by their daily lives, and decide to let themselves go by making a sex tape. However, before they can delete it, the tape is shared via The Cloud to every iPad they gave out as Christmas presents, and must track down each and every device to ensure no one sees the video. To be fair, it doesn’t sound or look great so the bad reviews aren’t really a surprise, but if this film leaves you with a bad impression of Jason Segel, maybe check out these ones instead to remind you of his real talent |
