Since 2010, the world has been a much happier place, for one reason and one reason only: The Minions. That’s right, those little yellow guys are officially the biggest stars in Hollywood right now. With the looks of Brad Pitt, the charisma of George Clooney and the talent of Orson Welles, the Minions have made their way to the top. They’re hitting cinemas this week with their all new film, named after themselves, so why don’t we take a look at the highlights of their already illustrious career?

Minions Quotes

Picture
Even though they can’t speak English, the Minions have been all over the internet with their array of cheesy, inspiring quotes. You’ve seen them before; you’re browsing on Facebook and suddenly you see a Minion pulling a cheeky face with a completely unrelated quote next to it, probably shared by your auntie. How else are middle aged women supposed to express such witty phrases like “Don’t be afraid of a few extra pounds, fat people are harder to kidnap” or “So if a redhead goes crazy, is it called Ginger Snaps?” on their social media? The Minions have provided a service, one that we are all grateful for.

Haribo Minions

They already dominated the screen. Their next goal was to dominate your tummies. The Minions hit store shelves a couple of years ago in the form of Haribo, the delicious sweet range who have several different varieties, but none quite as star studded as these. Rumour has it that the Minions were paid over £40,000,000,000 (Minimum £35,000,000,000) for their likenesses on these little sweets, which serve as perfect company when going to the cinema, treating your kids, or even if you just fancy a snack. When you need food, the Minions have got you covered.

The "Happy" Music Video

Picture
In 2013, Pharell Williams invaded the airwaves with his catchy as fuck song Happy, which featured cameos from several well-known celebrities in its astonishing 24 hour music video: Miranda Cosgrove, Jimmy Kimmel, Jamie Foxx, Steve Carell, and of course, those little yellow fellas got their moment. Strutting their stuff on the streets, the Minions completely outshined Pharell, who has recently come out and admitted that the song would not be as popular as it is without their appearance. The Minions made more in royalty cheques than Pharell did in album sales. That’s right, they’re hot property.

The Minions Shorts

Picture
They may have started out as supporting characters, but they first branched out into solo stuff with the six short films released with the Despicable Me films when they went to DVD. From the minute audiences saw them, everyone knew the Minions needed to be in the limelight. These wacky adventures saw them do some home decorating, learn the ins and outs of being a bomb transporter, and introduced us to their love of bananas. They’re hilarious little shorts that really make buying the DVD worthwhile.

Despicable Me 1 & 2

Picture
And finally, we come to their humble beginnings. The Minions were broke; they could barely afford to eat, and times were getting tough. They took a gamble when they entered the gruelling audition process for Despicable Me, but it all paid off when they found out that literally all of them had gotten a part in the film. Despicable Me tells the tale of Gru (Steve Carell), a supervillain who adopts three orphans to aid him in his latest scheme, but soon discovers what it means to be a father. The film is wonderful; absolutely hilarious and very heartwarming. Audiences were immediately smitten with the gang, and before they knew it, they were everywhere: Toys, games, clothes, products of every kind had their little yellow faces plastered all over them. They were rolling in the money, and saw no logical reason not to make a triumphant return for the sequel, Despicable Me 2, where they found themselves playing much darker roles and expanding their acting talents.

So what’s next for the Minions? Well, their solo film is already raking in good reviews, and is bound to be a box office hit. It’s only a rumour at the moment, but there are reports that they were seen leaving a meeting with the head of Marvel. The only way is up for these little fellas, and it’ll be exciting to see where they pop up next.
