by Matthew Gammond Well, that was a surprise wasn’t it? Who’d have thought a band of misfit criminals could have brought in that much money at the box office? The world was expecting Marvel to fail with Guardians of the Galaxy; the names of the characters pale in comparison to the bigger superhero heavyweights and yet the purveyor of all things comic book was launching this movie at the height of the summer season. Damn, they’ve got a solid brass pair. Worse still was the fact that it was following on the heels of the brilliant Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the equally exquisite X-Men: Days of Future Past (and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 I guess, but whatever). This was the biggest risk Marvel could take, but it paid off. by Leah Stone and Dave House Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the continuation of the re-booted simian series. The ALZ-113 virus caused the world to collapse, killing most of the Earth’s population. Those that remained were immune to the disease, and one civilisation of these people set up camp in New York, just outside of Caesar’s Ape territory. Yes, Caesar is still alive and the head of the Ape community. We see all of Caesar’s fellow super-intelligent apes and how their lives have developed since the humans were practically wiped out. Of course, there is conflict. The Apes discover that some humans have survived and both sides try and achieve peace. But is the film good or bad? Leah and Dave battle it out! by Cookie N Screen Glory days. It's the release of What We Do In The Shadows, a film that many writers at I'm With Geek have been champing at the bit (or chomping at the neck) to sink their teeth into. Bringing New Zealand humour into the sunlight (no, it burns), where it has tentatively sat in cult classics and The Flight of the Concords television series, hopefully, everyone will ignore dystopia young adult fiction and head to see this brilliant film. But before vampires, Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement created one of the best romantic comedies of all time - Eagle Vs Shark. by Leah Stone Sequels are often debated upon. With some films, it is better if they are stand-alone, as when a sequel is created it has to try and beat the quality of the first film, and sometimes this isn’t possible. Or maybe the first film was so awful that not even a sequel can bring it back. The first How to Train Your Dragon film was, let’s face it, incredible. And just when you think a sequel could never meet the high standards set by the first, How to Train Your Dragon 2 comes along and completely surpassed the first one. . by Jo Johnstone With shows such as The X Factor, Pop Idol and Britain's Got Talent all over television, the "rise to fame" story is everywhere you look. Popular culture is filled with characters that have made it from reality TV. In this climate, it is easy to forget that some artists still do make it through hard work and perseverance. With Begin Again, the audience watches the journey of budding young artists set adrift in New York City. by Cookie N Screen and Robbie Jones It’s 2023. The human and mutants are living on the brink of being obsolete. Robotic assassins named Sentinels are unstoppable, able to wipe out the race of mutants and those who will soon give birth to them. The few mutants left, Xavier and the crew, are fighting a losing battle that will end in the death of everyone. Their only hope is to send Wolverine back in time to prevent the war ever happening. However, when he is sent back in time, he finds that bringing Xavier and Magneto together is a harder task than he first thought. It's now out on DVD, but is it any good? Cookie and Robbie fight it out! by Cookie N Screen We just can’t get away from Christopher Nolan. After his ground-breaking, mind boggling Inception and his stunning re-envisioning of the Batman story, Christopher Nolan is hot stuff. Hot stuff? Erm, doesn’t sound right. Hot property? That’s better. Everything he touches is gold and finally, his beautiful looking space epic Interstellar is out so we can transcend within the stars. But before he got involved in caped crusaders, long before studio bosses were throwing all sorts of money at him, Christopher Nolan created Memento, a “will blow your mind” film, all on a shoe-string budget. by Robbie Jones One of the best feelings you can experience as a film buff is thinking that a film looks awful from its trailers, only to find that it’s actually quite brilliant. That experience came along with this year’s The Fault in Our Stars, which was made to look like another run of the mill, clichéd romance drama that ignored the heart of the book and what made it so brilliant. But, upon watching, it was when you realised that it’s brilliance was still there. |
