Hit Play: See No Evil 2

I like to think that there are two ways to enter a horror film. You either, for some reason, want to be scared completely out of your wits (and tits); or you want to have fun. After all, we’ve gone so passed desensitisation that it has flipped around and a truly amazing horror is one that can enthrall us with amazing comedy. You have to go into creating your horror film with these thoughts. You are going to blow people's sense of safety and security away from them and leave them putting the lights on whilst they sleep; Or you are going to pick some actress, get them to scream and flail around with hilarity. Guess which section See No Evil 2 falls in?

Hit Play: The Addams Family

There was a time, not so long ago when the idea of the reboot/remake was not something that came about every five seconds. Sure ideas were reused and redone, but before it was a love of the source material that inspired the work, not just studio profit. One such positive remake came in the early nineties when a group of people decided to re-imagine America's strangest family on the big screen.

Based on the cult sixties comic strip series of Charles Addams' cartoon family, The Addams Family brings the Gothic and peculiar bunch into the modern age. With parents Gomez and Morticia, children Wednesday and Pugsley along with eccentric Grandma Addams. In this version Uncle Fester has been missing from the family home for twenty five years. Scheming businessman Tully decides to send in a Fester look-a-like to take his place and steal the family wealth. As imposter Fester spends time with the unusual bunch, he grows to like them and perhaps finds where he is meant to be.

Hit Play: End of Watch

Here at I’m With Geek we’re getting tepidly excited for Fury – a World War 2 action movie helmed by David Ayer. And you can read my review of this week’s release now. But that inspired me to have a look back at one of the director’s previous movies – End of Watch.

End of Watch hit the UK in November 2012 to a wall of “well it’s actually quite good” reviews. It’s by no means an action classic but it’s still incredibly enjoyable and an example of a film that increases in quality as the minutes tick by.

The scariest villains are the ones who don’t have any reason to be evil – they just are. Sure, having a background of abuse or a tragic story could work just as well. After all, isn’t it terrifying to actually relate to someone who has killed many people? In a “if I went through this, I’d be exactly the same and I’d go around hurting people” way? But to see someone either devoid of all human empathy or someone who will inflict devestation because they like to see the pain, doesn’t that just creep down your back? Many male villains have this and are perfectly done; up until Hannibal Rising, Hannibal Lecter was the perfect scary villain and Moriarty, London’s Consulting Criminal, reveals in the glee of it.

Björk is one of those artists who transcends every three years into something nouvelle and unique. I may be biased. In fact, I'm very biased. I love her. But far beyond my love and devotion to the musician is my appreciation for an incredible film. And Dancer In The Dark, a Lars von Trier musical, is one of those undeniably brilliant films that proves that Björk can dive into the world of cinema and act brilliantly.

Hit Stop: Gran Torino

Yes, you read that right. This really is a Hit Stop feature. I hate this movie.

Gran Torino is a much-loved film amongst my circle of friends and I have no idea why. It came out in 2008, but I only got round to seeing it earlier this year, and I’m thankful I put it off so long. This is a movie that stars and is directed by Clint Eastwood, which for the most part is Hollywood gold. His films always receive a positive critical response and I agree with a lot of the reviews – I’m a massive fan of Million Dollar Baby, for example.

Hit Play: Dogma

Ben Affleck has had more shit in recent years than you can fling a Batarang at. And it only doubled when he was cast as the winged hero last year in DC’s upcoming Superman vs Batman: Dawn of Justice. Of course, some of these damning remarks are often brought up with the following uttered hushed disaster; Gigli. So moving past that, you have to cough up some honesty when it involves Affleck because, frankly, he has excelled much more than most give him credit for. Good Will Hunting, Daredevil (Directors Cut, people,) and many more showcase his talents as a solid thespian, writer and director. More recently, his acting is astute and incredible in the recent Gone Girl it's clear Affleck is triumphing again. But if you were to ask me what springs to mind when I think of Affleck is Kevin Smith’s on point religious comedy Dogma.
