Efron stars as Cole, a young DJ looking to find his signature sound. After meeting prominent DJ James, (the lovely Wes Bentley) Cole begins to get some direction with his music. Unfortunately his attraction to James’ girlfriend Sophie, (Emily Ratajkowski) complicates things. Will Cole choose his future or will he get the girl?
Directed by Max Joesph, who most will recognise as cameraman/presenter from Catfish: The TV Show, the film is a different direction from Joesph’s previous documentary work - going in a more commercial direction.
The trailer suggests that the film makes a comment on modern culture. With the invention of social media, modern technology and youth culture there is more opportunity than ever to make a mark, but at what cost? The stylized visuals and model cast rather suggest a film lacking in any real depth rather than a social commentary.
Lead Efron has proved in films such as The Paperboy that he is more than his High School Musical teenage pin up. He can actually handle a meaty role which is why this feels like such a step back. The trailer looks like an extended music video filled with good looking people. The added use of Emily Ratajkowski, the boobs and arse, (I mean, the brunette) from the Blurred Lines video does not do much to dismiss this claim.
The film feels like your pretty typical boys has dream, falls for girl that he shouldn’t which causes conflict scenario. Whether or not the film and its cast have anything original to offer, we will have to wait and see but so far our interests are not piqued.
