Not content with taking the formerly distinguished career of Liam Neeson and reconfiguring it to turn the Irish actor into filmdom's foremost face-puncher with gravitas, director Pierre Morel is turning those same particular set of skills on two-time Academy Award-winner Sean Penn for the upcoming action thriller The Gunman.
Based on Jean-Patrick Manchette's novel The Prone Gunman, the big screen version sees Penn play Jim Terrier, a former government operative no longer on active duty, looking to put his past behind him and move on, despite still being haunted by the things he did. However, one mission in particular troubles him enough to do some digging, which brings him into the firing line of his old associates.
The latest trailer for The Gunman shows much of the usual kind of action and duplicitous dealings for this type of genre fare (shootouts, fights and sinister phone calls), though the game is raised considerably by the inclusion of considerable acting talent from the likes of Penn, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone and Javier Bardem, with the latter as the former ally turned suited bad guy.
It may not turn out to be the franchise-starter that Taken turned out to be, but there are some capable hands carrying this one, so looks like it could be a solid piece of entertainment.
The Gunman hits cinemas on March 20th.
