So here he is again giving a great performance in crime drama Son of a Gun. It follows McGregor as Brendan Lynch, Australia’s most notorious criminal. When he stumbles upon JR, a 19 year old locked away for a minor crime, he takes him under his wing and protect him during prison. When he leaves, Lynch abuses the relationship and forces JR to enact a heist alongside Lynch and his crew. But as the crime goes wrong, Lynch is pulled further into a tale of cat and mouse as he tries to find out who to trust.
The trailer shows that the film could work on many levels but has the tendency to feel overdone or unoriginal. The kind of Faggin-esque spirit that McGregor is exuding here feels great because we know we are in safe hands. It also has relative newcomer Brenton Thwaites and rising star actress Alicia Vikander which mean that the characters will have depth and will be enthralling. But as far as the story goes, it seems pretty normal and not heavily exciting. It could be worth a punt or it could be usual crime thriller fare.
Son of A Gun is out January 30th.
