“Men and women can’t be friends,” is just one of the many clichéd lines that fill this trailer for romantic comedy Playing It Cool. What was that? I can’t hear you over the deafening sound of your eye rolls. There is everything from every romantic comedy in this this; cynical man falls in love with girl who has boyfriend, they become friends, he has snarky best friend, men talk about sex and the woman are like “do you have to talk about sex all the time?” and he runs through an airport. The difference with Playing It Cool has an aurora of something unique but it’s being held back from us.
After all, the film does star Chris Evans who has starred in many trope-tastic romantic comedies in his hey-dey. He plays a screenwriter actually sick of writing the said film he is starring in until Michelle Monaghan comes around (in, like, everything seemingly?) Cue the crescendo. What this trailer does do, however, is bring a cast so insanely incredible and irresistible that we may forgive them for being heinously corny. It stars Anthony Mackie (because it’s now contracted that the pair work together ever since Winter Solider and literally no one is complaining,) Patrick Warburton, Aubrey Plaza, Martin Starr, Topher Grace, Luke Wilson and many more.
It may lead to conventional viewing or it could break down many fourth walls and be insanely exceptional. Either way, all we know, is that filmmakers will be Playing It Cool.
