Paddington has been on my watchlist for some time and the latest trailer has done nothing to change my mind about that. The new trailer for the film that is out next month is charming, funny and quintessentially British.
Paddington sees the titular bear come over to England from Peru to stay with Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins. Not bad at all really, is it? This is the first time we've been able to hear Ben Whishaw as the bear since the news that he was taking over from Oscar winner Colin Firth. Of course, Whishaw is no stranger to playing iconic British characters: he was Q in Skyfall, and will portray Queen frontman Freddy Mercury in the biopic Mercury.
He seems to be the right fit for the bear and much better than Firth's portrayal. Director Paul King (director of popular British shows such as The Mighty Boosh and Come Fly With Me) seems to think so too. "He breathes and he speaks and he sounds like Paddington, rather than the most beautiful chocolate-voiced man (Firth) on the planet," he said.
It's also refreshing to see such a fantastic ensemble of British actors. As well as Hawkins, Whishaw and Bonneville, we have Harry Potter alumni Imelda Staunton, Michael Gambon, Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters all reuniting with producer David Heyman. It also boasts the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, too. Not bad.
Paddington looks like the Christmas film to beat so far, and I think it could be fun for all the family.
