2012 saw the release of Steven Soderbergh’s surprisingly fantastic Magic Mike, a film that is actually a lot darker than its light-hearted comedic trailers would have you think, starring Channing Tatum as the titular character, with Alex Pettyfer and Matthew McConaughey in tow. The film was great, and doesn’t necessarily need a sequel (especially if you consider the film’s ending), but luckily the first trailer for it looks pretty decent.
As you can imagine, there is absolutely nothing in the way of plot in this trailer. The trailer starts as Mike is working on some metal when he starts making some of those sweet moves he showed off in the first film. What follows is several clips of Tatum and his hunky co stars flashing the goods and showing some lucky women the time of their life. McConaughey and Pettyfer are nowhere to be seen in this trailer, but Joe Mangeniello, Matt Bomer, Kevin Nash and Adam Rodriguez return as his co-strippers (if that’s even a term). Now, this is kind of confusing (SPOILER FOR THE FIRST FILM) because at the end of Magic Mike, Tatum gives up stripping and instead starts a relationship with Pettyfer’s sister, whilst McConaughey and the other strippers were about to move to Miami. So what happened there? Did they too see that Dallas was douche and rejoin Mikey? Time will tell, but our returning cast members are joined by the likes of Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover and Jada Pinkett-Smith so there’s no disappointment in that department.
This first trailer is a fun look at the upcoming sequel but actually tells us very little. Hopefully on the next one, more will be explained.
Magic Mike XXL is out July 2015.
