Pixar have a way, don’t they? They have a way of getting inside our heads more than most, tapping into the emotions of everyone in the audience and finding a way to connect them to the characters onscreen, be they rats, robots or grumpy old men. Throughout the years, they’ve created some real moments of wonder and joy that linger in the hearts of children and adults alike long after the closing credits. And with their upcoming film, Inside Out, they’re turning that focus on the very emotions themselves and giving them voices to show just how they work in the mind of a little girl called Riley.
Riley has her whole life transported from the Midwest to San Francisco when her father gets a new job, and as Riley tries to adjust to her new life in a new city, it’s her emotions that help her through it all: Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. With the film taking place pretty much entirely in the little girl’s head, we get to see the chaotic attempts of her emotions to keep her in balance in this sudden shift of her life.
There’s something rather nice about this idea, if for no other reason than it presents an upfront engagement with how messy our emotions can get when presented with a challenge to how we develop and before they learn to properly co-exist, if they ever do at all. At this point, it’s perhaps a little early to tell just what the personality of Inside Out is just now, since the trailer is about 50% footage from previous films, but it certainly helps to make its point. Besides, it is only the teaser. We have almost a whole year before we get to see the finished product. At this point, though, looks like Pixar is on pretty firm conceptual ground.
The film comes out June next year, and will be preceded by the Pixar short Lava (which we’ve highlighted before). Can’t wait to see how this one develops.
