Being a comedian can be a curse. Starring in comedy movies and devoting yourself to making people laugh is a damn good way to spend your life, and people will love you for it. But the sad truth is, there’s a big chance just won’t take you seriously as an actor. Just look at Jim Carrey. Some people watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and don’t understand that what they’re watching is a visceral, emotional performance from a talented actor, and not “ace ventura doing drama lol”. If you become so well known for making people laugh, that’s all anyone will think you’re good for. Some actors have escape that stereotype, the most obvious example being Robin Williams, but perhaps Steve Carell is about to join that list. Despite performances like Anchorman and Despicable Me, if you look closely, a lot of Carell’s comedic roles in the past few years borderline on serious, or at least have serious elements to them which in some cases outweigh the comedic ones. Crazy, Stupid, Love, Dan in Real Life and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World are some of his best performances to date, and towards the climax each film, things get less funny and more serious, almost as if he was just slipping in his talent nonchalantly. Last year, he went all out serious as the despicable (ED: tee hee hee) step father in modern masterpiece The Way, Way Back. This year, in that period where all the films that are supposed Oscar contenders get released, he stars in Foxcatcher.
Now there have already been a few trailers for this film (Which frankly looks amazing, and received rave reviews from Cannes Film Festival) but this one is short, and is narrated by Carell’s character, as it takes a look at the darker of his character’s psyche.
Not only is Carell practically unrecognisable and discomforting with his the prosthetics on his nose, but his performance in this trailer alone is downright terrifying. It’s already being tipped for Oscar glory, but will Steve Carell be one of the nominees? Honestly, it’s looking that way.
