Now he has returned, all sea fresh with an ad-hock Scottish accent (that’ll take a few trailer watches to get used to, something to do before watching the film). Directed by The Last King of Scotland’s Kevin McDonald, Black Sea sees Law as a seafaring captain whose entirely team lose their jobs. When a mysterious gig comes into his hands, he reassembles a crack team of submarinests (submariners? Oh, submariners). However, the pressures of not having a steady job and the booty on show (gold, not what Drake’s after) turn the submerged work into a deadly game.
Kevin McDonald is an effective director when it comes to thrillers and bringing claustrophobia to the screen. And Law looks intriguing with this British/European cast. It could be bog standard but it’s nice to have a submarine movie that isn’t based on the war. There’s also Michael Smiley who is always a pleasure to see.
Black Sea is out on December 5th
