I dunno, does these even count as an actual trailer? All it really is is less than thirty seconds in which critics heap praise from afar whilst Keaton runs through the city in his pants... seems a bit much, huh? And considering how many trailers and clips and featurettes we've had from this film already, isn't this just a bit superfluous? Even doing nothing more than just lavishing in its own hype a bit? Perhaps... however, let's give it its due and acknowledge that, in the space of twenty-two seconds, they manage to get across a fair portion of the film's personality.
There's a twisted, even vaguely nightmarish streak of humour there, but also a juxtaposition of the extremely high praise (i.e. the cascading review blurbs that tumble across the screen) for the film and the decidedly negative heckling thrown at the lead character from within the film itself. That this juxtaposition is built from both visual and aural information would also suggest a deft use of the medium to convey opposing meanings.
When you think about it, they actually managed to do pretty well with just twenty-two seconds.
Birdman is released in the UK in January.
