I can’t quite put my finger on it but there is something so tantalising about The Riot Club. Perhaps it’s because portraying a secular group of Oxford students as nothing more than, well, ordinary prank inducing boys let loose on the grandiose acclaimed University. Maybe it is because it slowly spindles into darker territory because their privileged background leaves them drunk on entitlement and the trailer seems to showcase that darker side of richness. Or it could be possibly down to Sam Clafflin’s jawline.
Watching this clip, The Riot Club could be a British drama flick that works based on the backs of stuff like Skins (but with more millions in the bank). Written by Laura Wade, who wrote the original play Posh, The Riot Club is about boys entered into a long standing club thanks to their Daddies having money. But it all goes a bit pair-shaped.
If you are squeamish about bodily fluids and maggots in any way than I’d look away now. The Riot Club has presented us with a sickening clip of initiation where Sam Clafflin’s character Alister Ryle is carted off from studying and made to drink the most disgusting drink ever made. Not for the faint hearted.
But hey, as far as this goes it’s a very “boys will be boys” affair.
The Riot Club is out September 16th
