The New Girlfriend, from director François Oron, looks like a tantalising piece of drama that illuminates, yet again, the power of French cinema. This well-put together trailer looks entrancing and enthralling and all we want now is to see the film.
When her best friend dies, Claire is dragged into a lowly world of despair that neither herself nor her husband can get her out of. Visiting her friend’s old home, she stumbles upon widower David who has a bustling secret. Together, they endeavour to continue hiding it which, in turn, brings Claire new life - despite the suspicions of those around them.
Whilst I do believe this trailer gives too much away too soon, the film is still a must-see. There is enough hilarity and comedy that entices with the darkness and bleakness of death and grief. The only tentativeness is whether they’ll give a tender portrayal of transvestitism or transgenderism rather than exploit it for titillation.
Only time will tell.
The New Girlfriend is out in the UK on May 22nd
