The Lady in the Van is a true story written by playwright Alan Bennett about an elderly woman Mary Shepherd, who one day turned up on his street looking for a place to stay. After the government tell her that she can no longer remain parked on the street, resident Alan Bennett decides to let her stay on his driveway. Bennett, expecting only a couple of months of her company, ended up sharing his driveway with her for fifteen years.
A featurette has been released for the film, where the cast and crew talk about set and the characters themselves. It is revealed that the house used in the film is the actual house in question, where Alan Bennett lived for decades and where Mary Shepherd resided on the driveway. Bennett discusses Alex Jenkins, who plays him in the film. Jenkins has played Bennett once before, and Bennett talks about how eerie it was to watch Jenkins, reminding him of who he once was.
Dame Maggie Smith’s role is also discussed, picking up on her humour and how she took to the role so easily it was as if she was actually Mary Shepherd. We would expect nothing less from her being such a talented, experienced and celebrated actress.
We also get a preview of some of the scenes, hinting at what is to come. If you like films based on true events, and some brilliant comedy, then this seems like a great film to watch.
The Lady in the Van hits cinemas nationwide on the 13th of November.
