Michael Keaton is great, isn’t he? After all, he is Batman. However, he’s donning the costume of a new superhero now, for he is... Birdman!
Yes, Birdman.
Birdman sees Keaton as an actor, famous for his role as the titular superhero, who is struggling to mount a broadway play. As the opening night approaches, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career and himself. Here at I’m With Geek, we’re very excited for the film’s release, and if you are too, then check out these new featurettes and clips!
The featurette, titled “Levels upon Levels”, starts with director Alejandro G. Innaritu saying, “My intention was always to have the audience experience the film through the eyes of Riggan Thompson, I want them to be navigating through the labyrinth of what he is going through.” And the main star also lets in on how he approached the project. “I always knew this was going to be hard to explain,” says Michael Keaton. “Because the character and the film have so many levels, then the levels have levels.” The director returns to say, “There’s something very real, and something very surreal about it, we were projecting reality with fiction in the film.” The featurette ends as Keaton explains the levels of the film, saying, “It’s funny, then it’s twisted, then it’s dark, then it’s funny again, I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Alongside that interesting featurette are 5 clips from the film, which see Riggan having the reality of his career explained by his daughter (Emma Stone); finding a new lead actor for his play; discussing the merits of Hollywood and theatre; rehearsing on stage with Ed Norton; and encountering the foreign press. The film looks phenomenal, and it can’t come soon enough.
Birdman hits UK theatres on January 2nd, but it’s already been playing at festivals, and the reaction so far has been very promising!
