The Babadook has drawn a very thin fence down the line of critics, audiences and peers ever since its premiere at Frightfest this year (it was awarded Best Film of the festival too so that’s a plus). On one hand, people are applauding the ingenuity, premise and tension building spectacle coming from the isles of Australia. On the other hand (one being our very own Jo Johnstone) it has been lamented as dull with a “pantomime” spook at the centre of it. Though I know exactly one person who isn’t willingly to be verbose on the subject, after all, the latest footage to come out of the creaky woodwork has me hiding underneath the duvet. Yelp.
The brand new clip to come from the horror film is tantalising to say the least. Proving that fairytales aren’t as Disney fluff it up to be but as grim as the blackest of nightmares, this minute long footage shows mother Amelia reading to her son Sam. The tale? A mysterious one about a creature named The Babadook. It starts of insanely jovial but when Amelia realises that there is a sinister quality to the book, she and Sam start getting very panicky indeed.
There are three ports of call you can do after watching this clip. You can visit the brand new website to learn more about thebeast. You can read Jo’s review on thefilm.
Or you can do what I’m doing and blessing this house so it is free from unwarranted spirits and making sure you leave all the lights on tonight.
The film is making its Halloween rounds October 24th
