Why so serious? Wasn’t the fantastic elements of macho guys pummelling it out in the sun with this comedic undercut because it was lavishly over the top part of the fun? Didn’t Katherine Bigelow do a stellar job of creating something fresh, visually stunning and innovative with her directorial work? Do we need this? Do we? No.
Because judging by the first official trailer of the reboot, it is definitely a Fast & Furious knock off. Except they take the fun out of that too.
Point Break revolves around a detective named Johnny Utah who goes undercover and joins a crime syndicate led by Bodhi (missed a trick with calling him Brodhi, bro). As he infiltrates all their criminal activities, he finds himself drawn to them and soon has to figure out what side he is on.
Somehow how the line “I believe these criminals are professional athletes like me” is not met with chuckles from the police in the brief. It is told with in this mono-tone unhammy way that is stiff and lifeless. Jeez, we make jokes about Keanu Reeve’s acting in the first film but at least he had life. This film is taking itself way too gravely and missing the sun-soaked aesthetic that made the original perfect. Now rebooting for good reasons is fine. But changing the entire tone of a film phenomenon that has become a cult classic is just point-(break)-less. Without the unperceived silliness, Point Break is an over-serious debacle that’ll crash like waves.
