Featuring a stellar cast, with the likes of Nick Offerman, Molly Shannon and Connie Britton as well as newer talent such as Olivia Cooke, the story centres around two friends (Thomas Mann and RJ Cyler, playing “Me and Earl” in the title) as they hang out with Cooke’s “Dying Girl” (Rachel) as they each come to terms with their problems. The plot itself doesn’t appear to break any new ground to set itself apart from any other film of its ilk, but there is plenty to enjoy about the trailer.
Despite the subject matter involved, the trailer infuses a subtle, understated humour throughout, alongside a narration that carries a vein of filmic knowledge from the main character. Finally, to top off the list of indie film clichés, an acoustic guitar underscores the entire trailer (if you don’t believe me, check out every other indie film out there).
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is out 9th of September
