If you are fans of True Detective, then this seems to be the cinematic Spanish equivalent. Naturally, when one film in the genre does something new, the rest follow suit. So expect lots of imagery, some beautiful landscapes and people with moustaches demanding things in their uncouth policing. That’s how it feels with the trailer for Marshland.
Set in 1980, so expect lots of big hair and sad concerned thinking faces - maybe a few punches - Marshland revolves around two girls who have disappeared in an post Fascist society. There’s a serial killer involved and two homicide detectives with an uneasy relationship try to hunt them down. Because none of this has ever been done before. At all. Nope.
But then again, it’s a good idea to keep an open mind. While this may seem like a cliché and something we’ve all seen before - there has been great critical acclaim for Alberto Rodriguez’s work but this trailer doesn’t do anything to inspire. Still, with great reviews, it may something to look into.
Marshland comes out on the 7th of August.
