Macbeth, of course, is the classic Scottish tale of a man who is told he is destined to be king. Consumed by ambition as encouraged by his cold wife, Lady Macbeth, he conspires to kill his King and take his place. As his ambition grows his quest to keep control leads to madness and more bloodshed in one of England’s most renowned plays.
Kurzel previous feature efforts include The Turning as well as the critically acclaimed Snowtown in his Native Australia. Taking the title role is Irish/German actor Michael Fassbender while the hugely coveted role of scheming Lady Macbeth has been awarded to French actress Marion Cotillard.
The first clip shows the ambitious and brilliant Macbeth leading an Army into battle with the misty Scottish scenery displayed in the background. The second clip merely show Macbeth’s Coronation, after he has killed his king to steal the crown. Looked over by his wife, now Queen, Lady Macbeth as well a suspicious Macduff and his fellow countrymen.
As the film is a faithful adaptation the small clips have no spoilers, with the plot known to the majority of audiences. What the clips do give us is a look at the style and tone of the new film. The misty and gritty setting of the battle field shows a stylised but gritty backdrop. While the scope and scale of the Church during the coronation suggests that the film has some level of grander.
On announcing of the cast there was initial controversy over the films leads. Whether or not the brilliant Fassbender can do a good Scottish accent could easily sway the tone of the film. Early rumours suggest that Cotillard keeps her mother tongue accent in the film which some audiences and critiques felt was not in keeping with the character. Despite these fears both have the talent and potential to bring something new to their roles.
