Woody Allen seems to be the guy everyone wants to work with, even on his 50th production, he is able to accrues the finest acting talent in all the lands. Sometimes, more than once. Hs film garner different levels of acclaim and are always ensnared with his supposedly sardonic realistic nature and a lot of the times, the actresses that he works with end up going on to great success. Regardless of, what Allen does seem to do best is polarise audiences (not critics, most seem steadfast that he is a genius). Some would argue that his work are masterpieces whilst the rest regale how desperately dull (cough, Blue Jasmine, cough) they are. Some fervently cannot forget his indiscretions.
And now he is back, like he is every year, with a brand new movie called Irrational Man. Could this be an excellent film? Or just another character study on himself, maybe?
Irrational Man revolves around Abe - a philosopher professor whose life has hit rock bottom and he is unable to find meaning in his world. His best friend Rita wasn’t to rescue him from his fate whilst his best student Jill strikes up an enthusiastic relationship with him. And the pair become increasingly close when they listen in on a strangers conversation only to find themselves drawn into it.
Eeeeeeeh. I guess - in the tone of Woody Allen. There is something so tedious about this. Aesthetically, it looks incredible and having Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone and Parky Poser in your realms isn’t necessarily an awful thing. But there is something missing. Perhaps the magic left after Magic in the Moonlight was such a failure?
Only time will tell. Perhaps we’re all being a little…..irrational.
Irrational Man is out 11th September.
