Edge of Tomorrow, the science fiction action film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, was released earlier this year amidst a wave of publicity and good critical word, not to mention a triple-country première schedule that saw it released in Paris, London and New York on the same day, each one attended by cast and crew. Despite this, it still wound up with a relatively tepid box office return… which is kind of a disgrace, because it was one of the most thrilling and clever blockbusters to come along for some time that wasn’t under the banner of a mainstream comic label. More people should have seen this film in theatres, but hopefully the home release will redress that balance.
In anticipation of this release, Warner Bros. have released a deleted scene (available on the Blu-ray, but not DVD) which showcases some nice characteristics of the film. Major William Cage, a commissioned media relations officer (Cruise), has just been unceremoniously dumped on a soon-to-be-deployed unit of grunts the day before a full-on beach assault against an alien enemy. He’s never done this before ever, so when gets strapped into the tech suit he’ll be fighting in, he is at a loss. It’s a neat little scene, since it captures a snap of the science fiction, the comedy (both broad and dark), and the exact position of Cage at that moment – reviled, confused, afraid, and completely out of his element. Nice little clip.
Things may be a little awkward since Warner Bros. have made the attempt to rebrand the film from original title of Edge of Tomorrow and placing more emphasis on the film’s tagline “Live. Die. Repeat.” as a result of the poor box office. It’s a better title for sure, and does take up most of the cover space on the Blu-ray and DVD, but it’ll wreak merry hell with alphabetisation.
Look, all I’m saying is that this is a film worth seeing and you should definitely seek it out and give it a shot if you missed in theatres. Just make sure to check both titles when you do.
