Teenaged independents. They certainly churn them out, don’t they? Every year, or every week as it seems. They are usually sleep aware drenched in this brown aesthetic and an era of vinyl bound tunes that perforate the atmosphere. The Diary of a Teenage Girl, however, looks to be extremely emotional and hilarious all at the same time.
The movie revolves around Minnie - a girl who is longing for love and belonging after sleeping with a guy for the first time. However, when her mother introduces a new boyfriend named Monroe, she begins an affair with him. Provocative and illectual, this self-discovery film stars Bel Powley, Kristen Wigg and Alexander Skarsgard.
If you’ve seen My Mad Fat Diary or The Perks of Being A Wallflower, this will certainly entice you. But there is something extremely unique about this and that is centred on Bel Powley’s performance as the brilliantly blunt and hilarious Minnie. Already making waves at the Edinburgh Film Festival and Sundance this year, A Diary of a Teenage Girl looks terrifically poignant and hauntingly poetic this year.
