Just announced as being part of theEast End Film Festival as well as coming from incredible success at Sundance Film Festival and Berlin Film Festival, Diary of a Teenage Girl looks like an incredible sixties set mash-up between Juno and Ghost World. Though the sleepy brown hues echo similar indie flick aesthetic that we have seen before, the film from Marielle Heller, based on a graphic novel by Phoebe Gloeckner looks to be scintillating with stirring and comedic promise.
Diary of a Teenage Girl revolves around Minnie Goetz, a teenager who has just lost her virginity and now has to explore her pubescent awakening. The problem is that her boyfriend just happens to be her mother’s too and as she is seduced into this new level of sexuality, she has to navigate this new adult land.
Starring Bel Powley (known for Benidorm, M.I.High and recently in A Royal Night Out) as well as boasting another more serious turn by Kristen Wiig, this looks dreamily enchanting with a more emotive undertone. With such visceral tones comparatively similar to Fish Tank but with a flick of light-heartedness, this is more about Minnie’s cartoonish fantasy and how she has to balance her new emotive surroundings.
Diary of a Teenage Girl hits UK cinemas August 7th.
