Kate Mara plays Ashley Smith, a woman who has lost her husband and her daughter, and is close to giving up on life. She’s given a book by her friend, called Purpose Driven Life, but she rejects it. When Ashley is held captive by an escaped convict (David Oyelowo), she turns to the book for guidance, and finds purpose in not only her life, but helps him to find it in his too.
The film looks cheesy as hell, but with a story like that, it’s not exactly a surprise. If it had been an original story and it looked this cringey, then it would be much worse. Saying that, its emotional content might be more gripping than it seems, and, hopefully, we can expect two knock out performances from its two knock out leads.
Captive is out 8th September.
