Black Mass is an American Crime Drama film based on a book written by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Niell. The film tells the true story of Whitey Bulger (Depp.) He is the brother of the Massachusetts state senator William Bulger (Cumberbatch) and after a nine year stint in prison, he became the leader of and Irish mob and committed a string of infamous violent crimes. He later became an informant for the FBI for thirty years before being tipped off by his former FBI handler John Connolly (Edgerton) about a pending indictment, leading him to go on the run.
Warner Brothers have now released the first trailer for the film, focusing a lot on Depp’s character. The trailer is fuelled by dark comedy and the feeling of danger. We get to see Bulger’s dangerous side as he threatens John Morris (David Harbour) throughout the trailer because he revealed a family recipe and that meant that he could not be trusted. We see quick shots of some of the other main characters, as well as dead people, guns, clubs and the FBI, all there to show how powerful and dangerous Bulger is. Coupled with the dramatic music, you can’t help but feel a little threatened.
What can be learnt from this trailer? Don’t tell Johnny Depp how you cook your steak. Oh, and that Black Mass looks to be a decent film.
It’s set for UK cinematic release on the 23rd of September.
Johnny Depp is deadly serious in the tense first look at #BlackMass.
