Jesus Christ, one week until Season Five ends... The finale looks to be immense, but this week’s episode was pretty impressive too. Performance heavy, character driven, and aesthetically beautiful, this week’s penultimate has knocked it out of the park yet again.
Jesus Christ, one week until Season Five ends... The finale looks to be immense, but this week’s episode was pretty impressive too. Performance heavy, character driven, and aesthetically beautiful, this week’s penultimate has knocked it out of the park yet again.
This week saw something quite unusual for The Walking Dead: Cheese. No, Rick and the gang didn’t tuck into some brie, but there was a romantic sub plot featuring Carl and his new lady friend Enid as they explore the woods outside Alexandria. Carl has seriously gotten the shaft this season; previously we’ve seen him grow from an innocent young boy to a dark, warped young adult who wasn’t afraid to handle a gun and was willing to do what had to be done. But now that Judith is back, and the whole gang is back together, Season Five has seen Carl take on the role of babysitter now that Rick is back to leading the gang to safety. A lot of people find Carl annoying, but it’s fair to say that he was in dire need of a new storyline, and now he’s got one in the form of acting like a normal teenage boy. He’s fallen for a girl, but he’s too scared to kiss her as they hide from Walkers inside a tree. It’s quite a cute moment, a nice change of pace for the show and a bit refreshing to see that everything isn’t doom and gloom.
We are of course reminded about five minutes later that everything is, in fact, doom and gloom as Sasha has gone on a Walker rampage. This season has seen her lose the two most important men in her life; Bob, her love, which can be a rare thing to find in this new world; and Tyreese, her big brother whose death we’re still not over. Not to mention she now burdens the guilt of having told Noah he wouldn’t survive. She’s seemingly lost the plot, and Sonequa Martin-Green is putting in some fantastic performances. If she survives the finale, it’d be nice to see her promoted to main cast for the next season. Also, this segment of the story saw Rosita get more than one line, which seems to happen more and more now that she has appropriate clothing, so that’s nice.

But if we’re going to talk performances, it doesn’t get much better than Andrew Lincoln, giving possibly his best performance as Rick Grimes. This episode sees him get furious as Jessie agrees to let him save her from Pete, which leads to a massive brawl between the two men. It’s hard to call between Rick and Deanna; it would help if she saw where he was coming from. Yes, Pete is a surgeon and those skills are valuable to the community, but she has vowed to protect the people who live within her walls and allowing one of them to be abused is not what she’s supposed to do. At the same time, Rick is a bit too excited to see Pete dead, and whilst separating them was at least a calmer option, Deanna’s idea of exiling him is what’s best. But it seems even Rick’s tenancy might even be at risk as the tense, exhilarating fight between the two draws to a close when Rick goes on a massive rant about the way things need to be run. It’s quite involving, until he’s knocked unconscious by Michonne. What lies in store for Rick now?
Next week’s finale should be an absolute corker of an episode. What will Daryl and Aaron find in the woods? Will Deanna let the group stay? Is Tara going to survive? Will Pete get away with his crimes? Will Abraham say “Mother dick” again? All will be revealed in next week’s 90 MINUTE finale. But then it’s goodbye for six months. *sniff*
