There are only two episodes left of The Walking Dead this year, but before that, we take a look at Daryl and Carol’s quest to save Beth.
Let’s be honest: Not much happened this week. It was definitely a character building episode for Daryl and Carol, who were best buds separated for the second half of Season Four and reunited at last. They have always been one of the key relationships in The Walking Dead; it’s never been romantic or anything like that, but they took two characters who were nothing alike (A rough, manly redneck and a meek, quiet housewife) and had them bond over the loss of her daughter. Of course as the seasons went by, their characters changed. Daryl became softer, more sensitive but still capable of kicking some ass, whilst all Carol does now is kick some ass, though still suffers from traumatic experiences. Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride have always had fantastic chemistry, but never quite as good as this episode. Daryl and Carol spend the episode questioning themselves and their situation, all while on the hunt for Beth.
We don’t see Beth in this episode, however we are reunited with her friend Noah. Noah agrees to help them find her, until Carol is hit by the car of the police from the hospital (Explaining her being brought in at the end of the last episode), and we can now assume that Noah is the guy in the bushes from a few weeks ago. It’s quite disappointing to be honest. Noah isn’t exactly a bad character, and for all we know might end up becoming a major player in The Walking Dead, but considering we didn’t even know who he was at the time of that cliffhanger, it’s an extremely underwhelming reveal. So there goes all the fan speculation of Morgan or new comic characters or anything exciting (Unless Noah was a comic character, in which case it’s not too bad).
On top of that, this week just wasn’t very exciting. There were Walkers, there was a little action, but nothing to sit on the edge of your seat for. It was simply an episode for Daryl and Carol to evolve, and that’s not a bad thing in the slightest, but after weeks of intense action and performance (Not to mention the impact of last week’s episode on the story), it was all just a bit underwhelming. Despite that, it was still an impressive entry into Season Five, and good Lord does next week look fantastic. Daryl and Noah have gone back to the church to retrieve Rick and the gang to help them rescue Carol. Expect lots of action, plus a look in with Glenn and his group. We’re getting closer to the mid season finale, and things are about to start heating up.
