In true Vampire Diaries fashion, last week’s season premiere ended with everybody in a bad state; Stefan was constantly dying and reviving with the temptation of turning off his emotions becoming greater; the relationship between Damon and Elena was questioned when Damon couldn’t risk Katherine dying; Katherine was badly injured after the crash; Jeremy almost died (again); Caroline received a heart breaking message from Tyler after her new roommate fell to her death; and Ghost Bonnie watched on, helpless, as Silas killed her father and compelled the town to search for Katherine. For a premiere, a lot sure did happen to our favourite characters to ensure our return to the show. After five seasons, we are emotionally attached to these characters and it is as though they have compelled us to follow them on their journey, to mourn and celebrate with them.

An injured and dishevelled Katherine stops a passing car only to be attacked by the driver. The driver was in attendance when Silas compelled the town. Matt saves Katherine and, along with Jeremy, ties her up in the back of their car.
Stefan is lying in the sun by a lake with his arm around Elena. Elena's curious; why is he dreaming of her in this place and accuses him of distraction. What else is Stefan supposed to do to pass the time, when he is locked in a coffin / safe in the bottom of a quarry? Elena starts choking and coughing up water as the viewer is treated to another heart wrenching scene of Stefan dying again for the umpteenth time since Graduation.

Matt and Jeremy stop for a gas when Katherine tries to escape. Matt is inside paying when the compelled cashier tries to phone Silas. Matt tears the phone off the desk and knocks out the cashier. Jeremy chases and catches a disgruntled Katherine.
Meanwhile, Damon is at the quarry where Stefan had previously intended to dump Silas’ body but had instead been incarcerated himself, and convinces Sherriff Forbes to sweep the quarry for Stefan.
Silas, as Stefan, reveals everything to Elena that Damon kept secret from her; Jeremy's expulsion, Bonnie’s father dying and the new resident at the Salvatore Mansion. Looking for Katherine, Silas asks the oblivious Gilbert her where her brother, and his secret companion might be...

Back at the Bonfire, Elena meets up with Jesse, Caroline’s new love interest. She helps him to collect firewood while he tells her about Professor Wes Maxfield and how it is rumoured that he is part of a secret society. Damon appears and knocks Jesse out, much to Caroline’s disappointment.
When Matt comes around, he's not alone; Bonnie is standing right beside him. She explains to him that he’s dead and is on the Other Side. In order to live again, he has to find his body. A stunned Matt asks the big question; How can she be there? Forcing the witch to come clean about her own lack of life.

Jeremy finds Matt’s body, where he is confronted by Silas. Silas realises that Matt is not dead and correctly guesses that it’s because of the Gilbert Ring. Jeremy reveals that since Silas isn’t a vampire, he is slower and weaker than a vampire whereas Jeremy has the added advantage of being a Hunter. Silas is still immortal though and quickly neutralises an attacking Jeremy. Silas is shot by Katherine who returned to save the day. This could quite possibly be the first time she did something good for another. Careful Katherine, I think I see your humanity showing!
Matt talks to Bonnie and tells her that she doesn’t need to be strong; she died. He helps her realise that she doesn’t have to hide how she feels.
Caroline has a touching moment with Jesse where she blurts out that she has a boyfriend and then gets really embarrassed. He describes his previous relationship to her and it’s parallel to hers and Tyler’s. Is this the start of Jessoline?

Matt gets back to his body and forgets everything that happened when he was on the ‘Other Side.’ Silas is back at the petrol station where two people walk in looking for him. It is revealed that they are part of a mysterious group called ‘Travellers’ and Silas exposes them as the ones responsible for the spell on Matt. The woman, Nadia, kills the man with her and tells Silas that she has her own agenda and wants to work with him.
Elena is packing the car to leave college when Professor Wes Maxfield approaches her and offers to meet up to explain the fiasco with the death certificate. Elena tells him she will find him when she is back. She had decided that she couldn’t stay at college knowing that Stefan was suffering. Damon hands Elena Stefan’s daylight ring, which he had stolen back from Silas earlier on. Delena shippers will be happy to know that the couple are still going strong.
Sherriff Forbes has found Stefan’s coffin / safe in the quarry and calls Damon and Elena to open it with her. When they do, there is a dead body in there with its throat slashed; it isn’t Stefan. Damon hints that the escaped Stefan may be reverting to his infamous Ripper persona.

The scene where Elena is trying to kill Damon was probably the highlight of the episode; I would once again like to credit Dobrev on her much improved acting so far this season. Her Elena was dry and annoying and even her previously amazing Katherine has somehow been improved! Bravo Nina. You just took this show to a whole new level. The look in her eyes as Damon told her to think about Stefan. I was both thrilled, as a Stelena fan, but also heartbroken for Damon, who must have realised on some level that she still loves Stefan. We all know where this is going to go though…
Bonnie is, as always, a great yet underrated character. It was nice to see the character finally let her emotions go instead of trying to be strong for everyone else. She needs to put herself first and get through her death, and knowing her, find a way to reverse it.
What does the Ripper's return mean for the citizens of Mystic Fall and for Silas? Surely there's bound to be a grudge? Will Elena focus on snapping him out of it again or will she go back to college? Will she have another choice between the brothers later in the season? I have heard there may be a new romantic interest for her at college. I would like to see her with someone different for a while. It would give Damon a reason to be the bad guy again and for Stefan to figure out who he is, because apparently, A century and a half wasn’t enough time for him to have a definite sense of character!
