The Vampire Diaries is now on its fifth season, which can only mean one thing. 100 episodes! A great deal of shows do not manage to hit this milestone so it’s worth celebrating such an achievement! It would not be possible without such talented writers and believable actors. The have managed to draw the audience in and keep them interested for 100 episodes, and judging by the story line this week, many more episodes to come.
Despite Katherine’s weakness, she didn’t lose any of her snarky characteristics and still managed to make the audience laugh at some of her lines. She looked glamorous as always. She knew what she wanted and she got it, as usual, actually surprising some of the other characters with her sheer determination. She is a great character and the show has done well with her, especially in this episode where more of her character was revealed than ever before.
Caroline (Candice Accola) has been pushed aside this season which is a shame as she is one of the most talented actors on the show and one of the most popular characters. Fortunately, she was brought back for this episode with some hilarious, ditsy lines and her usual gossip oriented mind. Caroline was happier than she has been for a while on the show which meant the audience could once again see her hyper neuroticism for which she is so well loved. Her costumes, as always, were gorgeous and suited her perfectly. She is highly fashionable and many girls will be envying her wardrobe and style.
Damon and Stefan are at the opposite sides of the moral compass. Whereas Stefan was sweet and serious, in the same situation, Damon was brutal yet hilarious. For such a sombre episode, many laughs will escape the throats of viewers.
The show appears to have created a new drinking game for when you are watching the series. During Katherine centric episodes, whenever she does anything bad to a character, you drink. Whenever she does something even worse and trumps the previous bad thing, you drink two. The fandom will never be sober during seasons two, four and five!
There were a few things in the episode which were not explained and hopefully not forgotten about in the future. It made it confusing but leads to the thought that something bigger must occur as a result.
The ensemble were a strong team this episode, which seems to be a turning point for season five. It’s had its brilliant moments but also some boring moments but this seems to be where the writers were heading for so hopefully the second half of season five will pick up and make this the best season yet. The Silas story arc was engaging but the vampire experiment storyline, which in theory should be good, has been slow, with very little development up until this point.
For a 100th episode, it was better than expected. For a milestone like this, a lot is expected from a show and this did not disappoint, despite previous concerns. This will hopefully lead a better second half of season five. One thing is for sure: people were sat at their edge of their seats this week and will remain so until the next episode is aired.
