Only a couple of days ago, we saw Sherlock return in The Empty Hearse. A bright mixture of fun, drama and character development, we welcomed with open arms the arrival of Mary Marston and smiled with joy at the reunion of Holmes and Watson. Now we are beaming with great big toothy grins as Mary and John wed, Sherlock Holmes has to deliver a best man speech and there is something suspicious and foul happening at the reception.
There is a problem with trying to bring everything to everyone, some people are definitely going to be sorely disappointed. When it comes to BBC's Sherlock, a lot of people are suffering from the major time period between series and over thinking it all. In fact, it seems more and more people are projecting a different version of Sherlock that relates more to the story going on in their head than the show. And a lot of people want him to be this robotic, solve a murder every hour, crime machine. Today, Cumberbatch’s Sherlock breathed this enigmatic man who is still the cold, manipulative and calculating mind but seen with caring layers that John has helped develop. The best man speech was an excellent combination of deductions and sentiment, as well as flashbacks to a Holmes opening to his best friends new life (plus a hilarious stag do scene.) It feels more of a journey into the original canonical Sherlock and Cumberbatch is as powerful here as Holmes is trying to touch a tender quality. In his speech, all sides came out and you can’t help but fall into a different level of love for this character.
This series just begs for repeat viewings but a couple of things are guaranteed; the finale is going to be soul crushing. And the more we fall in love with Mary (let’s face it, Amanda Abbington is iconic here,) means the more likely we are going to lose her. This is Sherlock after all. While now, it may seem like it is all "weddings and love; we're a happy show, honest."
We all know next week it's going to be death, villains and murder.
