Right now, Doctor Who is on that long break between the Christmas special, where the Doctor regenerated, and the next series. We have to wait till November for the next adventures, so I decided to compile all of the useful information on the New Who companions in a useful guide.
Rose Tyler was the first New Who Companion, travelling in the TARDIS, first with the ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and then the 10th Doctor (David Tennant.)
She grew up on a Council Estate in London with her mother Jackie Tyler, and without her father. When she met the ninth Doctor she was a 19 year old with little in educational achievements and was dating Mickey Smith, who would also feature in a few episodes. It was noticed by both the characters and viewers that Rose had transferred her romantic affections to the Doctor. The relationship grew with the 10th Doctor, who eventually returned her affections, however, she was left trapped in a parallel universe with her mother, Mickey, the parallel universe’s version of her father and her brother. However this is not the last she sees of the Doctor, as the 10th Doctor manages to find his way back to her and leaves a human clone of himself with her to lead a happy life together.
Martha Jones met the 10th Doctor whilst he was recovering from losing Rose. She was a physician working at Royal Hope Hospital in London when it was suddenly transported to the Moon by the Judoon. After the Doctor and Martha saved the hospital and returned to London, Martha decided to join the Doctor as his next companion.
Martha also fell in love with the Doctor, yet unlike others she did declare her feelings for him. There was fears that perhaps she would be a ‘rebound’ after Rose, but the Doctor did not return her affections and so she decided to cease travelling with him. She did have a few adventures with him from time to time, one of her most well-known episodes was that concerning the Family of Blood, who had tracked the Doctor, causing him to become human and placed Martha as his watcher until he became a Time Lord again.
The story of Donna Noble was a tragic one. The Doctor saved her from her awful fiancé Lance Bennett who was serving under the Empress of the Racnoss. From there Donna became the 10th Doctor’s companion, after spending a lot of time trying to find him again, and eventually comes across him investigating the Adipose. The next episode she visited Pompeii with the Doctor on the day of Vesuvius’ eruption. Despite the Doctor stating it was a fixed point in time so no one could be saved, Donna persuaded him to save one family. She visited the Ood Sphere, met Agatha Christie in a tangle with giant bees, and visited the Library where we first met River Song. Donna later became known as The Most Important Woman In All Of Creation as she saved the whole of reality from Davros and the Daleks. However in order to save the universe she transformed into the DoctorDonna and to survive the transformation the Doctor had to wipe her memory of any recollection of the Doctor and alien existence.
Amy Pond was the first companion of the 11th Doctor. She first met the Doctor as a young girl, after he crash landed in her back garden and later tried to solve the problem of the crack in her bedroom wall. He vowed to leave and return a few minutes later, however turned up 12 years later, when Amy was now an adult, working as a kissogram, and dating Rory Williams, a childhood friend. After defeating prisoner Zero, with the help of Amy and Rory, the Doctor took two years out to get used to the TARDIS. In the meantime, Amy and Rory got engaged. Before the wedding, Amy went on a few adventures with the Doctor before returning home. They collected Rory from his stag do to go on a romantic trip to Venice with the Doctor, where they encountered ‘vampires.’ They then went on several more adventures, before Rory was killed. In his guilt, The Doctor took Amy to many wonderful places including to meet Vincent Van Gogh. After the complicated and confusing events involving the Pandorica, Amy returned home to marry the fully-alive Rory, and had many more adventures with the Doctor until the episode The Angels Take Manhattan, where both she and Rory were sent back in time to New York and could never return, trapped in the past. Thus ended the Pond era of Doctor Who.
Clara’s life is extremely complex and complicated. Her journeys with the Doctor mainly concerned the Great Intelligence. She entered the Doctor’s timeline at Trenzalore in order to reverse the damage done by the Great Intelligence, which created many copies of her. We meet one of these copies in Asylum of the Daleks, and another calling themselves as “Oswin Oswald” and we first meet the Great Intelligence.
After the two episodes with ‘copies’ of Clara, the Doctor met the Original in an episode where the wifi was taking over people. After ridding the world of that problem, (caused by the Great Intelligence), the Doctor and Clara proceeded to travel together, including to the rings of Akhaten, encountered the Crimson horror and eventually ended up in the mess at Trenzalore where she jumped into the Doctor’s timeline before The Doctor rescued her original self. Though not before encountering "The War Doctor".
Her most recent escapade with the Doctor was in The Time of the Doctor, where she witnessed his regeneration into the 12th Doctor.
