“From the ashes…rise” proclaimed the trailers for the return of Teen Wolf in its fourth season. And in the season opener, The Dark Moon, we’re taken back to the most important ashes of all, those from the Halefire that preceded the show’s pilot, and formed the back story of so many of these characters. The Dark Moon is an exciting, very different episode with a happy mix of action and horror. The only problem is, it seems to disregard the consequences of the preceding season.

The final seconds of the episode, with the reveal about Derek, may seem a little laughable at first, but the more you consider it, the more horrific Kate’s actions may seem. It’s possible that Derek may have to relearn things he already knew, and given how tragic Derek Hale’s life constantly is, we may be in for unrivalled levels of pain in the next episodes.
Overall, The Dark Moon was an assured, funny, and exciting season opener, and this new pack has quickly and firmly cemented itself against a new threat. The only thing that is lacking is some sense of continuity with the events of previous seasons, but with any luck, that is yet to come.
