The Force has finally smiled down upon us! This week’s episode of Star Wars Rebels takes a break from the more traditional team up of Ezra, Jarrus and Zeb to take a look at two of the more ignored characters, Hera and Sabine. Despite the focus on other characters, the show still manages to keep the tensely paced and enjoyable action sequences that the show has enjoyed so far.
As has been previously mentioned, Hera and Sabine have been in desperate need of more screen time since almost the beginning. Whilst the plot may have been light on their pasts within the Star Wars Universe, it gave them a chance to come out from under the yoke of the rest of the crew on The Ghost, and it finally got Hera out of the cockpit to perform some fancy shooting.
The episode takes some of its cues from the Vin Diesel film Pitch Black. Hera and Sabine are stranded on a deserted asteroid populated by creatures harmed by the light of the sun, and they must survive long enough for the others to come and rescue them. The set-up helped show Sabine’s tactical knowledge and Hera’s role within the crew as the fixer for their jobs.
Despite the minor flaw, Out of Darkness was well crafted and gave the spotlight to some of the characters relegated, until now, more towards the background. There’s still a mystery to their backstories, but it isn’t quite so important now that they’ve been given time to grow outside of the rest of the main cast.
