Game of Thrones "The Dance of Dragons" Review (Spoilers!)

Episode Nine of Game of Thrones is always the most exciting. The penultimate episodes of the past four seasons has seen Ned Stark getting beheaded, Stannis Baratheon’s attack on King’s Landing, Robb and Catelyn Stark being slaughtered and the Night’s Watch defending Castle Black from The Wildlings. Overall, it’s usually the biggest episode of the season, but that didn’t look to be the case this year. Last week’s episode was a triumph and cast members have said that next week’s finale will break the internet, so episode nine is just plopped in the middle. Will it be able to rival its predecessor or successor?

Maybe. But first, let’s talk about all its issues, because it wouldn’t be an episode of Season Five if there weren’t any.

Outlander very quickly became one of the best shows on TV. Well, Video on Demand anyway. Amazon Prime did something courageous in adapting Diana Gabaldon’s work that rivalled Game of Thrones and Vikings so well. The writing is splendid and gifted us a full fleshed “modern” woman, bringing her into the 1700s and exploring the tensions between Scotland and England. The story of Claire Randall magically being whisked back in time from 1945 to a war torn Scotland and scooped up in the arms of Highlander Jamie Fraser whilst trying to get back to her husband Frank. All the while the pair are pursued by the ruthless and sadistic Black Jack Randall, a distant ancestor to her husband…

Sense8 "Limbic Resonance" Review (Spoilers!)

Netflix’s latest original series, Sense8, definitely has the sci-fi heritage. Co-created by the Wachowski siblings (The Matrix) and J Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5), and starring actors like Doctor Who’s Freema Agyeman and Lost’s Naveen Andrews, the series aims to explore the subjects most science-fiction shows tend to skim over, like gender, sexuality and religion. Based on the first episode, does it succeed?

Hannibal has left us crying out for more as the cliff-hanger finale of season two, missing its psychological prowess and cannibalistic poetry. Despite a few middling episodes, Outlander has quickly become a popular and well-written show, perhaps one of the best on television now. If you, like me, are following it weekly since its UK premiere on Prime, then you’ll have heard rumours of story lines to come. And articles that solidify the fact that Outlander continues to defy and has transcended into a smart, emotional and riveting television series. This episode sees it fully unhinge the middling episodes that were weighing it down at the belt. With ferocity, it leads off into a second half of the series much stronger than the first.

Fans of The Mortal Instruments books were, for the most part, disappointed with the film, with the remaining feeling disenfranchised with the whole affair. So, when it was announced that a TV show would give the series a chance at redemption, a great sigh of relief was heard around the internet. Then the cast announcements gradually trickled out and for the most part, they felt pretty spot on. The excitement for the show is practically at its peak. And then came the announcement that the studio were about to release the first teaser of the show.

Here it is, we’ve certainly had an interesting ride. There have been some good times, and some bad times. And then there’s that season where everything went a little off the rails. But, somehow, against all odds, they managed to pull it back and return to form. The symphony of the show may have hit some bum notes here and there, but a series should (probably) only be judged as a whole, not by its individual parts.

Looking back on the rather poor quality of this season, it shouldn’t be as surprising as it is. Season Four of Game of Thrones wasn’t amazing either; it certainly wasn’t bad, but it lacked the quality of the previous seasons. Season Four may have dropped in quality but it still blew audiences away with Tyrion’s trial (Peter Dinklage’s best performance on the show by far), the heartbreaking battle between Oberyn Martell and The Mountain that left viewers shocked and disoriented, Tywin getting his just desserts from Tyrion and of course, the television masterpiece that was The Watches on The Wall, an hour of breathtaking action and exhilarating performances. Everything bad about Season Four can be forgiven for those things, but Season Five has yet to do anything brilliant. Poor efforts every week, and whilst last week wasn’t bad, it certainly wasn’t great. Hardhome is the first episode this season to truly knock it out of the park, but does it make up for the rest of the season?

Based on the historical events leading up to the American Revolution, an all-star cast brings to life the stories of some of American history’s most famous men. While we might think of George Washington as white wig and wooden teeth, Sons of Liberty aims to change that by telling us about a group of young men trying to find purpose in their lives, who end up changing history in their fight for equality.

Outlander "By the Pricking of my Thumbs" Review

It’s a fair to say that television shows are allowed a few weeks off. Unlike film, the objective to continuously provide excellence week in and week out is a tricky task to muster. The writing has to be fully fleshed out, the acting needs to be spot on and the storyline must lift off from the week before and delicately in to the week that proceeds it. That element of impeccable continuation is never achieved in a television series and you’ll find that the show is often blighted but one or two “bad egg” episodes. This week’s Outlander - By the Pricking of My Thumbs - is one of those middling to poor episodes that is trying to continue with the change of dynamics of its predecessors.
