It is with a heavy heart I write this penultimate review to the first, and last, series of Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. Running in parallel with this sad news, the storyline is becoming all the more grave as Jafar’s evil plan takes to the fore.
The Red Queen is encased in a glass coffin Snow-White-style. Will, forced to watch her stabbing, now has to deal with the barrage of feelings thanks to the return of his heart. Jafar’s father is still imprisoned in the castle dungeon and the Jabberwocky is still on the prowl…
And ‘hugging it out’ is unlikely to be on the cards for today.
It is this that persuades Will (Michael Socha) to take the staff from Alice (Sophie Lowe) and Cyrus (Peter Gadiot), but even after punching Cyrus squarely in the face and running off, they all end up reunited again. When the Jabberwocky (Peta Sergeant) joins the scene everything takes an interesting turn and a plan is hatched building the suspense ready for next week’s finale…
In the flashback portion of the episode which explores Will and Alice’s friendship, Will, in his full Knave of Hearts uniform is on patrol with the guard, hunting for the most dangerous criminal in Wonderland – Alice. The Queen of Hearts had dubbed her a murderer (with a few other nasty words as well) and having taken Will’s heart he now has to do as she asks, in this case kill Alice.
To diffuse the situation, Alice decides to take back his heart from the Queen’s vault and return his ‘free will’. They soon realised that when she has the heart she can command him to stand on one foot, flap his arms like a chicken and not kill her. Her aim in Wonderland was to prove to her father that she wasn’t crazy, leading to her capturing the Rabbit and subsequently to finding Cyrus’s bottle… all thanks to the Knave in a roundabout way.
So where are we now?
She can’t bring back Anastasia, but Amara (Zuleikha Robinson) could… So despite originally planning to return the staff to the Well of Wonders and the Guardian, they chose to release Amara and try to save the genies, Anastasia and the rest of Wonderland…
His death prompted Amara to help Jafar to ‘change the rules of magic’ and the episode ends with the horrified faces of Alice and Will as they watch the end of the world as they know it.
So what can we expect from next week in addition to the dull ache of knowing it is the last episode of Once Wonderland ever? We can’t be sure but we can hope for a happily ever after, a family reunited and bread-and-butterflies…
