Season Three of this critically acclaimed political drama, has constantly been brewing, boiling and stewing giving us little whiffs of what might happen and what will actually happen. Reaching a critical level in all aspects, it’s safe to say that this finale was quite unexpected.

If you actually stop for a moment and think about the characters that reside in this universe of politics and outright deceitfulness, it’s near impossible to think of a character who is actually likeable. Hard isn’t it? From the get go this powerhouse of a couple have been fighting for one thing – the White House. Getting Frank’s oh-so-arrogant arse on that chair, behind that desk, telling the world what to do was virtually their soul aim. Not just for the status, but for their marriage too. Now having observed this couple for over 39 episodes, it is painfully obvious to the viewer that they have worked on everything else in their lives apart from the one thing that will hold it all together – their relationship.  One could argue that this show is based about the politics of their marital woes and the actual politics are just there to stop them killing each other in moments of boredom. It is particularly excruciating to watch Claire humiliate herself leading Frank to turn into an even nastier version of the cut-throat President we all now know a little too well.

The race is on. Every politician is grasping at straws and finding that little bit of dirt to throw back in others face, in the hope to throw them off track. Yet, the person who captures the crowds and really draws in supports is Claire. Heather doesn’t have anyone like Claire and the moment realisation sets that she can’t be at Frank’s side anymore, his campaign loses its flare and passion. What was first a challenge has not become a deadly duty that is consuming everyone, slowly rotting them from the inside out.  Everyone on screen has never been portrayed in such a dark and menacing way. Going from working together as a solid team to completely and utterly fending for themselves is not what they want during the middle of a campaign. In amongst all the back stabbing and lies, the depth and complexity that has gradually emerged from Doug’s character is refreshing. Although, he is still obsessing over Rachel, the writers make it very clear that this sub-plot may be well and truly over!

After all the cards have been laid out on the table for us to see it’s no wonder this episode is as bleak as it can be. Once again, Wright and Spacey have shown us just how versatile and truly talented they both are. The two have shared so many things together that in the public eye they seem unbreakable, untouchable even by the horrific events that have occurred over their years together. There is supreme tension and awkwardness that near unbearable to watch and the two seamlessly work together to make that happen on screen.

The final scene sets up Season Four very nicely, as well as leaving us gasping at the screen for more! Naturally, after watching an entire series, you can’t help but pick holes and focus on the flaws. All in all a very captivating, well-paced and developed season from the White House. Bring on Season Four.
