Following last week’s epic return of hit series House of Cards, the second instalment is equally as engaging. There is something so captivating about watching Frank and Claire communicate on screen. This relationship, founded on power and success, is rather dysfunctional but it appears to be what these two humans need in order to survive.

As we have witnessed during the first two seasons, politics is a ruthless game and you have to get your hands dirty in order to play. Even though this is only the second chapter of season three, the writers have well and truly defined the dark side of politics. After the failed attempt at eliminating a terrorist threat with no civilian casualties, it’s down to the White House to sugar-coat the situation.  With Frank as President there is no holding him back, despite his colleagues constantly second doubting him and disagreeing with his new campaign, ‘America Works’. Frustration is plentiful and when you try to do, heaven forbid, something different when actually sitting in the chair it proves much more difficult than Mr. President initially thought.

The characters are creations of corruption and greed. Series composer Jeff Beal provides yet another ideally flawed composition that works seamlessly alongside the trials and tribulations each person has to expertly wangle out of. There’s no doubt these two are in way over their heads. We are presented with a split screen montage of both a worried Frank and concerned Claire grovelling in order to maintain their positions. The amount of pressure they are both under seems to be grinding them down the bone and one can’t help but ask the question - “Was it really worth it?” As for Doug, I am sure he is asking himself that question every day, yet he still wants in. Now that’s dedication.

It’s outstanding how corrupt the people we see before us really are. After all this show is all about fighting for what you want and not quitting however tough it gets. Except, the darkness that creeps in whilst doing so becomes too much to bear. The classic Shakespearian couple of Macbeth spring to mind when it comes to the things this pair does, murder might as well be on their list, oh wait isn’t it already? Once again Spacey and Wright give unbelievably brilliant performances. Wright plays up to the utterly conniving and manipulative wife; as well as Spacey terrifyingly installing fear into his troops or being on the verge of tears. The other plotlines are engaging enough; albeit it’s the scenes between the President and the First Lady we can’t help but yearn for.

It’s a bad day for this powerhouse of a couple and they are falling, falling fast. Not even nepotism will save Claire now. Emotional lapses and frustrated outbursts are frequent; it’s going to take hard work and quick thinking to ensure their security in The White House.
