Gotham is in full flight with the new, clean-shaven Jim Gordon showing off his chase skills. Ben McKenzie, post-Southland, seems to have fit right into his new rookie detective role.
Gotham is the tale of Gordon’s rise to the Police Commissioner we all know and love, and possibly his investigation of the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne.

Gotham is the tale of Gordon’s rise to the Police Commissioner we all know and love, and possibly his investigation of the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne.
Throw in the corruption Gotham is notorious for, and you can see Fox is planning long-term for this show (Fox’s definition of long-term, that is). That said, Fox president, Kevin Reilly also described this show as an “operatic soap”, with Gotham teetering on the edge. Anyone else worried at the words “operatic soap”?
The show also plans to incorporate the origin stories of Batman’s other famous, or rather infamous, super-villains and vigilantes. And, first up we have the Penguin AKA Oswald Cobblepot. Played by The Walking Dead’s Robin Lord Taylor, he certainly cuts a fine, refined figure on the Gotham streets. Does Ben McKenzie have wardrobe envy, I wonder?
Set pics also give away what could be a huge spoiler for the show and the Wayne murders that defined Bruce Wayne. But, given Gotham’s reputation for corruption, and a casting calls that imply Gordon’s search for the Waynes’ murderer is sort of a long-term storyline, how accurate is that headline?

The Penguin is one of Batman’s oldest enemies, and Taylor is far off from the short, round Penguin we’re used to seeing Batman face from the films. In this incarnation, he is a psychopath, albeit it a very polite one, who works for Gotham gangster, Fish Mooney. Mooney is an original character of the show, and will be played by Jada Pinkett Smith. She’s described as a “sadistic gangster boss” and owner of one of Gotham’s hottest nightclubs. Interestingly, she’s got street smarts and “almost extra sensory abilities to read people like an open book.” Agents of SHIELD seems to have snuck in an origin story for Deathlok along the way, so I wonder if her extra sensory hints at the same for Mooney?
Gordon isn’t going to be facing down these foes alone – Donal Logue is set to play Harvey Bullock. In the comics, in one incarnation, he starts off as a crooked cop, before he turns over a new leaf, which bodes well for the Gordon/Bullock relationship, hopefully.
