It was a pretty weak outing in Westeros this week, though it had its moments. We got to see just how badass Greyworm really is, unnecessary boobs (Because boobs), a great start to a hopefully epic storyline, this, alongside the criminalisation of homosexuality, has sent the show down an even darker path, allowing it to spread its wings further from the yoke of its literary origins.
It wasn’t all bad. Jaime and Bronn arrived in Dorne, where Jaime had his first proper fight without a hand. He kind of sucks. But of course, that was to be expected, and it hopefully won’t mean the death of him. Especially since he’s worked out his other hand is more useful than he thinks. He can catch swords with it, but why can’t he, like, knock people out with it? Just hit people in the bridge of their nose with the hand that’s made of fucking gold and they’ll be straight on the ground. That’s one thing Bronn couldn’t teach him. However, this storyline is slightly dragged down a bit by Ellayria Sands and her Sand Snakes who vow to avenge Oberyn’s death. Look lady, we all miss Oberyn, okay? But he agreed to take part in that trial by combat, knowing that he would face death, and this was not a personal attack from the Lannisters and should not be taken as such. Apparently, her book counterpart is nowhere near this vengeful. This is also where the script got a bit contrived, when that girl went on a massive speech about what Oberyn did for her and it’s like “Yeah, a simple yes or no would suffice love”.
The Stannis Massive (Thank you, Thronecast) are still at Castle Black and we got a particularly touching moment between Stannis and his daughter Shereen. You have to feel sorry for her; her deformity has lead even her own mother to shun her. But Stannis told her of the lengths he went to to make sure that she survived her illness. Stannis has never been a particularly emotional person, so this was nice and different, and an excellent performance from Stephen Dillane.
So it was a pretty bad week, bar two of its storylines. Is the show’s quality falling too fast or are there better things on the horizon?
