There are television intros that are like crack. This is serious. Probably created by that mass conglomeration machine that churned out ‘Everything is Awesome (which is actually awesome) and ‘You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful’ (which isn’t); songs that get stuck in your head. Game shows are the worst. Ok, so some of them are ridiculously boring but take a look at these crackers and I dare you to spend the day not humming in these in complete epic unison. So ladies and gentlemen, let’s begin plunging those annoyingly addictive theme songs;
Growing up as a nineties child in the United Kingdom meant that there was only one man who ruled your life; Richard O’ Brien. Long before the introduction of Rocky Horror Picture Show (that’s before a child is introduced to it, by the way,) O’Brien was the balded extravagant host of The Crystal Maze. This show was epic, with teams doing physical and psychological activities against the clock to earn a special crystal but if the time runs out, they are trapped there…forever! This theme song encapsulates all that is dooming and puzzling. Probably most memorable because we love the show.
Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? Actually, sorry, but that isn’t technically a theme song but definitely keep that in mind when we talk about the brilliant Gladiators. Possibly the show that everyone wanted to be on, what with all the inflatable goodness and giant Q-Tips, Gladiators pitted ordinary folk against behemoth athletes in a game of physical strength. Ok, so maybe not everyone wanted to be on but we certainly enjoyed the spectacle even when Wolf turned up and we all booed him. And the theme song? It certainly showed that this television show was of Olympian proportion.
So, if you look up Jim Davidson’s Generation Game (the game with some outlandish moments and crazy tasks for our amusement,) forgetting about his utterly racist rants and complete dickish behaviour in recent years, you’ll get a bog standard theme tune that is utterly boring. Luckily, they re-vamped it and had a band play the introduction. And what song did they pick? Only Emmerson, Lake and Palmers classic prog-rock song, Welcome Back My Friends that is highly entertaining and like a wobbly man, completely unforgettable.
Ah, Blankety Blank, the show that was pretty much an experiment to see what would happen if you put six celebrities in a wall and supplied them with copious amounts of alcohol. Of the many versions of the show, including an American one, the most memorable one was when Lily Savage hosted. Paul O’Grady donned his best dress and gave an unforgettable saracastic turn as the hostess with the mostess. And who could forget the outrageously catchy theme song that sounds like a bunch of all smiley, glittery jacket wearing people singing Blankety Blank over again? No one. Well, not now anyway.
Stand aside, move over and pay attention. This is the greatest theme song for a game show of all time. No truly, Pat Sharp’s Fun House was the fun show that all ages would watch. I recall a memory of sobbing because I was grounded and I could hear this sweet soulful tune come from the living room; it still pains me now. Fun House was a kids game show with the child teams in a crazy aced play house that had go-karts and gunge as well as logical questions. The song. This song is amazing, need I say anymore? Enjoy it
Because basically, you use your body and your brain if you want to win the game…
