Saturday night family television has evolved a lot since I was a child. Back then Big Brother was a ‘social experiment’ and not a springboard for Z list celebrities, and Fame Academy was competing with Pop Idol for the most heart warming contestant, (for anyone whose interested Lemar and Will Young are still battling for this title).
I’ve found that with these shows, the judges are no longer the enemy. Remember Nasty Nigel from Popstars? Or when NODODY understood Simon Cowell’s choice of wardrobe? Now it’s as if everything he says is taken as gospel. After ten years of hard work, Simon Cowell can now talk people like a dick and be praised for it. Hallelujah!
The acts are becoming more ludicrous every year too; I tend to trawl through YouTube to find the most ridiculous singers and people who talk back at the judges. I’m not proud of this but this shows why I can’t stop.
