Finally returning after the Christmas break (it seems such a long time ago now), Constantine is back for the second part of its first (and quite likely only) season. It’s been a bit of a bumpy ride, with low ratings and occasional duff episodes holding it back, but NBC have brought it back in an earlier time slot, though whether to try and save the show, or use it as proof it that no one watches it at any time of day, remains to be seen.

Perhaps it’s because of the long break, but it feels like there is some of the magic missing from this episode. The sense of urgency that was generated by Constantine’s wound at the end of the previous episode, now over a month ago, has been lost. Whilst it makes sense for the writers to use the mid-season finale as a cliffhanger, the urgency of the situation has dissipated, and all that remains is a sense of confusion as you scrabble to recall past events of the show.

Constantine is back, but the break seems to have stunted its growth. With only four episodes left before the grand finale, it’s looking unlikely the show will be able to tie up all the loose ends without some very rushed storylines, either it will come back for a second series and give the show some better semblance of closure, or it will end up like Firefly, a show doomed to fail before its time. Still, at least we got a film out of it that time…
